How To Control A Skid

by SWERVE Driving School

When most of us were first taught how to drive, we were told that if the car ever began to skid, to "steer into the skid". And when many of us got into a skid situation, we did little if anything - or steered the opposite way than we should have. Why? Because, "steering into a skid" is a difficult thing to figure out during the panic of controlling a skid. I've noticed that at least two-thirds of drivers will either steer the wrong way or do nothing at all. That's because "steering into the skid" is too confusing. In fact, I think it's the most confusing thing anyone is ever taught in their driving life.

So what do you do? How do you control a skidding vehicle.

  • Your car follows your vision - where you focus your eyes is where the car will go. And, this works with a skidding vehicle as well.
  • If your car begins to skid, "look and steer where you want to go" will automatically make you "steer into the skid".
  • The important point is to focus your eyes where you want your vehicle to go, and then you will naturally steer in that direction.
