Physically Model What to Do

Some times, just adding a little physical animation to your words makes all the difference. Saying "Keep your hands steady" doesn't have the same effect as physically modeling what steady hands look like from the passenger seat while saying it. Most of the time a driver can use peripheral vision to copy you. For more complicated situations, have them pull over and show them what you mean while the car is parked.
